A few months (?) ago, Discord updated on my computer and promptly stopped working. [It would technically launch, but the program window was just a blank rectangle.) Subsequent updates (which happen pretty much every time I relaunch my browser) installed cheerfully enough and made no difference. I grumpily chalked it up to not having updated my OS in ages (I'm very resistant, but usually enough things eventually get creaky or stop working that I give in and get

scruloose to update the system), and since Discord was still working on my phone, I figured that was that for the foreseeable future.

Then a couple of days ago, I let Discord install its newest update...and suddenly everything worked again. o_o I certainly wasn't going to complain, but it surprised me enough that I mentioned it to Kas on the weekend, and having just dealt with some Discord shenaniganry himself, he had an answer: Discord has decided it doesn't play nicely with some VPN locations, and I had happened to change my location setting to one it liked.

I mostly lurk on Discord, but there are a couple where I make tentative attempts at being social, and my dislike of typing more than a sentence or two at a time on my phone meant I was even quieter than usual for a while there, so this is a good development. But also, WTF, Discord.

Did I forget to mention the new-to-me Christmas ice cream here? It looks like I did.

A local ice creamery (Dee Dee's) does Advent calendars, which I had largely forgotten about until I saw mention of it on Bluesky, at which point I was safe from ordering one (too late!), but it got me to look at their seasonal flavors. Next thing I knew, I was asking

scruloose to stop at a local-groceries shop that carries their ice creams, because I had to know what the chicken bones* flavor was like.( more about that, plus a cheese stash )

Literature has been in a plundered, fragmentary state for a long time. When I was thirteen I purchased an anthology of Beat writing. Immediately, and to my very great excitement, I discovered one William S. Burroughs, author of something called Naked Lunch, excerpted there in all its coruscating brilliance. Burroughs was then as radical a literary man as the world had to offer. Nothing, in all my experience of literature since, has ever had as strong an effect on my sense of the sheer possibilities of writing. Later, attempting to understand this impact, I discovered that Burroughs had incorporated snippets of other writers’ texts into his work, an action I knew my teachers would have called plagiarism. Some of these borrowings had been lifted from American science fiction of the Forties and Fifties, adding a secondary shock of recognition for me. By then I knew that this “cut-up method,” as Burroughs called it, was central to whatever he thought he was doing, and that he quite literally believed it to be akin to magic. When he wrote about his process, the hairs on my neck stood up, so palpable was the excitement. Burroughs was interrogating the universe with scissors and a paste pot, and the least imitative of authors was no plagiarist at all.*

Engineer visited. He was... not encouraging.

I swear, if I ever run into this contractor ever again, I'm going to punch him right in the dick.

I'm not sure what happens next. Engineer said he would talk to permit wrangler and see what they could come up with, but that hasn't happened yet. I suspect he's trying to close out a bunch of work for end-of-year, so hopefully early next month there will be a plan.

Walked past a dog park on my way to the gf's a couple of days ago and a few of the owners had laced LEDs in different colours through their dogs' collars. It gets dark at 4:30 in Toronto, so all I could see were these clusters of bobbing lights running around in circles. It honestly took me a while to figure out what I was looking at.

Fucking genius to be frank.

Physio continues to go really well. I'm now running into the problem where I have been off my feet for so long they are a bit de-conditioned from walking so I'm getting sore arches and blisters as I get back into it. S'fine, I know that part is temporary.

I don't know if the news elsewhere is talking about it, but this year's version of the flu killed a couple of kids here in Canada, so it's getting talked about. It's either mutating faster than usual or the vaccine wasn't exactly for the right strain, because it's dodging the vaccine and it's an especially nasty version.

So my dad's wife has laid down the law about masking if family wants to visit him this winter and I am very relieved. I plan to remind everybody prior to the "official" Xmas dinner that they need to mask for the couple of weeks after New Years and partying like it's 1919.

I finally opened up the ancestry account and I've been futzing around with it a bit. My brief exposure to people who get into genealogy is that it's mostly retirees who take it up as a hobby and I can see why - it's time consuming. (Maybe possibly being from an Irish Catholic family where everybody has 12 kids does not help with that.)

So far I've found a bunch of relations that hie'd off to the USA and one possible connection to Australia. I'm mostly mining other peoples' family trees at the moment. There is a higher level membership that gets you access to newspaper archives, I figure I'll do that one when I've collected enough hints to make it worthwhile.

Whew! We're almost there! Time has moved so strangely for me this year. It doesn't feel like any time at all has passed, yet here we are with only a handful of days left.

Blessed Yule and solstice, friends. May this next turn of the year be better to all of us than the one that's just ended.

Impressively and unexpectedly, we didn't lose power on the weekend (so many people did!); not really coincidentally, Bucky remains undecorated. We also haven't put up any lights or the wreath outside (probably just as well, given the winds), and I didn't even think of that until maybe yesterday. Oh, well.

(I no longer have any real hope of finishing a draft of this rewrite before Christmas, since I'm getting such a late start on work today and we have plans for much of Christmas Eve once

scruloose's half-day of work ends. It's fine. I've been doing other things. *shrugs*)

A few nights ago I guess I ~slept wrong~, as I woke up Saturday with a very unhappy neck. Yesterday was better, and today is better again, and I'm lucky to not have this kind of thing happen more often (*knocks wood*), but it's so annoying as well as painful. Body, if you're taking damage while sleeping, why don't you move to a better position?! Does the conscious brain need to handle everything around here? (Thankfully no.)

I'd also love anything set between the books, although I know it's not a lot of time that has passed when Twisted Shadows begins, it's clear that Reece and Evan have been texting regularly in the interim. And I love how well we get that sense in the first few chapters of them talking more and more, thinking of each other more and more--falling in love. So anything that explores and expands on that dynamic would also be amazing.
Or I'm not against some imagined happy future for them if you want to hand wave (or if you're even brave enough to take a shot at) how they get out of their cliff hanger and live happily ever after.

I am among the fan girls who read the "From Antarctica with Love" article and became deeply invested in the Atkinson/Pennell love story. I'd also love to see a bit more from Atkinson's pov about Pennell as it feels like we have more of the reverse in Pennell's diaries. I'm okay with the story being realistic about the time period that they were in and the incredibly challenging and harrowing events that they lived through. Some melancholy is okay, but would love for there to be more happiness than sadness.

River is my favorite. He is so dumb and means so well, and yet he is so damn bad at being a spy. I love him fucking up in lovable ways that come from his good intentions. I love all his abandonment issues and his relationship with his granddad, and yeah, I just love River.
Jackson I love for the total opposite reasons. I love that he appears bumbling and is secretly incredibly competent. I love how loyal he is, and I love how much he despises River's Granddad and yet can't quite force himself to despise River as much as he wants to.
Standish, I love the way she interacts with all of them and keeps the team together. Her perpetual exasperation/affection, and the way she’s constantly showing, that yeah, in fact, she’s an agent too, actually, so don’t underestimate her. Where River often tries to be compassionate but trips over his own self-absorption, Standish seems to have more of an innate capacity for empathy and insight into people that the others don’t always recognize as the incredible skill/asset that it is.
So yeah, that's what I love about these characters, and I would happily take any story where they and any other members of their band you care to throw in there are interacting in ways that highlight these aspects
I do not ship anyone on the show and would rather not see any of them having interactions that feature romantic feelings or sex. At least not with each other. If you're inspired to give one of them an oc romantic interest, go for it.

I have been putting up my Christmas decorations, and amongst them are my amazing wonderful Biggles Christmas decorations, generously made and given to me by

debriswoman. I shared a photo of them on discord, and inevitably this led to taking them as a fic prompt, and so now we have the very informal Mistletoe Challenge. The rules are, the fics must be inspired by these decorations, and less than 1000 words because it's a busy time of year. I have made a little AO3 collection for any resulting fics,

silversmith has already written a fic, and having accidentally started something, I had to write a ficlet myself!

What did she think when Alastar first came to Imageisle? What did she fall in love with? Does she talk to her friends about him?
For individual characters:
- I'd love to see Alastar's backstory more explored -- his experience coming to Westisle or learning to interact with wealthier people or some time when the wide class divide between him and Alyna cause stress to their relationship.
- For Alyna, I also want backstory and her experience adjusting to the Collegium after coming from a High Holding and her evolving relationship with her family, including her niece.
- For Dichartyn, I also would be thrilled to have backstory -- how did he end up where he did with the opinions he did? What are his relationships with Poincaryt and Dyana like and how did they develop? How did he meet his wife? Also, his POV on Rhenn at any point in those books.

What was their first time like? How did it even happen/how did they overcome Gideon's established lifetime of repression? Or post-canon Gideon and Zeb exploring their relationship with better communication established. Does Gideon end up with PTSD from the horrible house party? Does Zeb? How do they negotiate the persistent challenges of living together (take 2) and working together (also take 2, admittedly in a less toxic way)? I have a headcanon that Te'ijal Ravenfoot is a psychopath. I would love a story that explored this concept further, delving into how Te'ijal's psychopathy would affect/recontextualize both her interactions with her colleagues and her actions throughout the Aveyond games. Furthermore, content that supplements those already in the Aveyond games, such as extra conversations or scenes, would also be welcome.
DNW: Unrequested kinks, mundane/setting change AUs, Te'ijal being "cured" of her psychopathy (i.e. being made neurotypical), Te’ijal character bashing*, neurodivergence being used to excuse bad behavior**.
*Given the stigma surrounding psychopathy, I understand if there is any confusion over this specific DNW. Let me make this clear: psychopaths are still people; having little or no empathy or emotional intelligence does not make one categorically evil or dangerous. For the purposes of this prompt, Te’ijal should be a person with both rights and accountability.
**Using neurodivergence to excuse bad behavior sounds something like this: “She can’t take responsibility for her actions because she can’t control herself/she doesn’t know what she’s doing/her brain isn’t wired correctly/etc.”
On a related note, I am fine with the inclusion of sanist language, bigotry, and/or violence as long as it is not presented as ethically/morally correct by the story itself. Keep in mind that hostility towards a neurodivergent offender in retaliation to the offender perpetrating antisocial behavior, such as inflicting harm upon or violating the rights of others, is not necessarily sanism.
On another related note, I am also fine with Te'ijal receiving treatment for her psychopathy as long as it does not fall into the trope of curing neurodivergence.
Disclaimer: Psychopathy is not a condition that one can be clinically diagnosed with. The proper diagnostic term for people exhibiting behavior commonly associated with psychopathy is antisocial personality disorder. However, the term "psychopathy" is still useful as a descriptor for a distinct pattern of behavior within the spectrum of antisocial personality disorder.

The first chapter of this book is such a peanut gallery of all the adversaries of the story. This is my favourite characterisation of Ulryk in the literature so far. He's described in an incredibly sexy way, too, with eyes darkening in anger or sparkling in joy. During the introductory conversation, his mood switches from ire to amusement with the speed of a falling blade, and he manages to offend his late brother in front of a stranger.
And then there's Kuno! Obviously used to his master's volatile nature and making snarky remarks about it. Isn't that an interesting relationship? Why is the grand commander allowed to laugh at Ulryk's expense? How close are those two? Is there friendship or something more between them? Or maybe they're just two like-minded baddies united by common politics?

I love these three so much, and I want to see how they’d all interact put together, either pre-canon or through some canon divergence. What if Theo joined Nick when he fled and Benji ran into them again on the run? What were their childhoods like? Nick is autistic, was he unwittingly the one that Benji heard about autistic kids being a burden for “God’s strongest warriors”? I would be happy with just about anything from this canon! Give me it all!

I’ve read a lot about Rupert and Amir’s relationship over the course of fanfic, what I really want to see is how they interact with their mothers and mothers-in-law. Does Atossa respect Rupert’s knowledge of culture? Does Lavinia find Amir a little too quick to fight and perhaps a little too aggressive for her tastes? I’m so curious and I want to hear any and everything you might headcanon about those relationships.

This campaign has been wild so far, I love it. I've enjoyed the different trials and the emphasis on individual spells and the fact that the NPCs are ridiculous but I'm still emotionally invested in many of them. Things I love about these characters: Rural Medicine and Texaco Mike doing a little bit of everything to keep their community alive, Pathology being wholesome in the basement with his microscope, Anesthesia's complicated relationship with Surgery, Ortho and Opthamology being confused about the squishy non-bone parts of the body/everything below the nose, Ortho in general, the different characters interacting with each other, the fact that all the doctors ultimately want to help people despite their individual issues and the stress that they're under. It's fun to see comments or reaction videos from people in the medical field talking about how accurate the sketches are. I'd be interested in reading about the different medical specialties interacting with each other and how they have unique perspectives that influence how they see their jobs and the human body. It could also be fun to read something from the perspective of a patient who is navigating the medical system and meeting the different providers.

I appreciate how Elisabeth Wheatley is an avid romance reader and writer who doesn't mind making fun of the more ridiculous romance tropes, so that the series comes off as self-aware without being mean. It's fun to see how the genres have different perspectives on issues related to romance but they also find common ground a lot of the time. I also enjoy how they explore the fantasy that it would be easier to date a vampire or fae lord than it is to deal with modern dating culture. I'd be interested in seeing new genres interacting with the main four (sci-fi romance? queer romance genres?) or hearing them discuss different topics. Or what if they somehow ended up in each other's genres?

Sid is great and he doesn't get enough love. I'd also enjoy exploring more of Galavant and Isabella's relationship, either during canon or post-canon or in some alternate universe. I love this show because it feels like ""crack treated seriously"" fanfic except that it's canon- I like the songs and the 4th wall breaks and the satire that manages to be fully earnest at the same time. Since I'm vaguely tracking things we've been making: a few days ago we made Smitten Kitchen's gingerbread apple upside-down cake. It's tasty, although I didn't like it nearly as much as the SK Mom's Apple Cake that we made not that long ago. (

scruloose likes it more than I do, for the record.) Now I mostly just want to make an actual gingerbread. ^^;

(My brain keeps starting to compose a post or posts about my currently-annoyingly-complication feelings about holiday baked goods etc., between our intensely-covid-cautious life and my still-newish need to stay aware of my blood glucose, but will I actually manage to write about it? Who knows. It's exhausting.)

I started my first day of vacation waking ahead of my alarm from a weird, teeth-clenchingly stressful dream, possibly one of a sequence, and it takes me a while to shake off dreams like that. >.< I've gotten a couple of household things done/underway, though, and am sitting down to do some manga work once I've posted this.

We still haven't decorated Bucky; he comes with lights, which are the most important part of a Christmas tree, especially without the smell of a real tree, and at least one year we bought our tree and put lights on it and never did anything more, and that was fine. I guess it's possible this'll be another such year. (Although we're due for strong winds and heavy rain tonight and into tomorrow, and if we lose power, I guess that's something we could do tomorrow afternoon.)

But we got most of our other fragments of decor up last night, and this morning I put out my Nativity set for the first time in a few years. It's wooden, but a couple of the pieces have taken damage over the years nonetheless (before my time, or when I was young enough that I don't remember what happened), and having it out around the cats has made me nervous since my mother gave it to me* several years ago. But a few months ago I bought a piece of display wall shelving for my office (and my office mostly stays shut when I'm not in it for long), and the set fits in it fairly well, so now it's there and I've got my fingers crossed.

(Also, this year I bought an old-fashioned ceramic tree from a local artist, and it's on a speaker under the wall display, so realistically, if a cat gets up on my desk where they shouldn't be, I'll know about it from the tree going down. [Which I really hope it doesn't, because it's breakable and the lights aren't actually attached, so that's all kinds of cat hazard in a package. And thus, it's in my office; if the cats were actually prone to getting on my desk and messing with things, I wouldn't have bought the tree at all, but even Sinha is really pretty good about it.])

*I think I mentioned at the time that this is the Nativity set of my childhood, carved of olive wood. My mother's parents once--in the '50s, I think? When she was a kid--were in Jerusalem over Christmastime, and brought it home. Mum deciding to pass it on to me is genuinely one of the best gifts she's ever given me.
